I just came across this announcement that was posted only 2 days ago on vogue.it so I wanted to share it with all of you living here in Shanghai.
“An itinerary across the artistic and literary inspirations of one of the world’s best-known fashion houses; a journey to disclose Chanel world and culture. It will be called “Culture Chanel” and will be opened on January 15th at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, on show until March 2011.
An artistic itinerary that investigates and further examines the strong bond established by the house, founded by Gabrielle Coco Chanel, with the cultural suggestions of her time. A connection that has evolved with time, to adjust to the changes occurring in society, yet never renouncing the basic values and the aesthetic standards that have always been the signature of Chanel.
Through the four hundred pieces showcased – ranging from garments to fragrances, to photographs and films – the exhibition, curated by Jean Louis Froment and supported by Chanel, will explain the relations of Mademoiselle Coco with great artists of her time, such as Igor Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso, and deal will the artistic interaction of Karl Lagerfeld with Third Millennium culture.
While the MoCA in Shanghai is not new to exhibitions celebrating the big names of international fashion – in 2008 the museum hosted a great retrospective on Salvatore Ferragamo – the bond between Chanel and Shanghai is consolidated: in 2009 the fashion house with the overlapping double ‘C’ launched a website dedicated to the creative triangle Chanel-Paris-Shanghai, including events, collaborations and boutiques.”
To me, one of the greatest things about living in a place like Shanghai is the fact that so many designers have only recently started to build relationships with the city. The love for fashion is new here but soon to become in the roots of the city. So glad we’ll be able to witness “Culture Chanel” before having to leave!!
